A House Divided Against Itself Will Fall (Luke 11:17)

(1 Corinthians 1:1-18) Some things never change it would seem. In his first letter to the church in Corinth, Paul was addressing the issue of the people being divided over who they were following. This sure sounds a little like the state of the church global these days. Paul wrote that it wasn’t about following him, it was about following Christ. We have this problem of “what” we’re following even in the local church.

We so easily get caught up in tradition and personal preference that the church becomes divided when none of those things should really matter. Personally I feel that if we can accept and support each others tradition and personal preference while at the same time having the same goal of following Christ, there can be a degree of seperation. Quite frankly there comes a point where we ought to respect each others personal tastes, and this is only acceptable while one’s personal taste is God honoring.

If we look at the never ending battle over music in the church, what Biblical justification can one really find for saying one kind of music is bad or not. We should recognize that music is a matter of personal taste, and all musical styles can be God honoring, and simply be accepting of each others desire for different music.

There are so many issues that divide the church today, some are issues of not following God’s standards (these are the most hurtful to the church and it’s influence in this world), other issues are simply a matter of personal preference. We really should just label them as such so that we may still be united in our divirsity.

  2. I completely agree that we should do all things to honor the Lord. It is not ok to accept any kind of music within the church. We must remember that we receive Christ in our hearts we become new creations and we leave our old lives behind us. We can listen to rap and country music that is Christian and edifies us as children of God. What good does it do to listen to music with messages about killing people and degrading women and about suicide. There is absolutely NO edification in that and you must seriously examine yourself and opinions. God’s grace is not a license to sin. If we could live our lives however we wanted what is the point of salvation then?

  3. So this is the second comment that seems to not know how to read this post. You both need to read a second time what I’m saying. I never said anything about all music CONTENT being ok. If you read it I said STYLE. Do you know what MUSIC STYLE is? HELLO! Perhaps I should have said GENRE instead but it’s the same thing. I’m against people and churches saying that you can’t listen to rap, or country, or heavy metal, or anything else if you are to be a Christ follower. THAT is my point. And your posts are exactly my point in people being quick to judge when they don’t even comprehend what they are reading or hearing. I didn’t say anything about letting people do whatever they want because they are covered by God’s forgiveness. Quite putting words into my mouth.

The church today does let itself be divided, and some of these things are over someones preference or devotion to traditions. There are issues that divide the church that are valid,t hings that God flat out says are wrong. These divisions hurt the overall ministry of the church, and it’s a shame. It’s a shame that there are so many people that claim to be Christ followers but pick and choose what in His Word they wish to believe.
